Israeli Occupation Forces set fire to Beita Vegetable Market

November 14, 2017
in Israeli Violations
مصادرة غرفة متنقلة في قرية فروش بيت دجن في منطقة الأغوار الشمالية

  • Violation: setting a central market on fire
  • Location:  Beita town- Nablus city
  • Date:  April 28, 2017
  • Perpetrators: Israeli Occupation Forces
  • Victims:  22 Palestinian families

Details:

The central market of vegetables and fruits in Beita is considered a revenue and an economic source that provides job opportunities and income for many families and the area's residents.

It is reported that the central market had parts of it demolished by Israeli Occupation Forces in 2016.

On April 28, 2017, a massive force from Israeli Occupation Forces raided Beita village from the western entrance where clashes erupted between soldiers and locals. The force fired stun grenades and tear gas canisters at the youth, causing vegetables and fruits stores to get on fire. The fire spread quickly reaching other stores in the market.

According to Beira municipality, losses were estimated of $741,610. Many families (approximately 30) got their source of income cut off after the fire damaged the stores they live off of .

It is reported that many investors in the market lost huge amounts of money due to the fire. Cheques and financial papers burned down in the fire causing many to lose their capital.

Closure of entrance and hindrance:

Not only the Israeli Occupation Forces caused the fire, they also closed the western entrance of the village via earth mounds and cement blocks and hindered the fire brigades from reaching the location to extinguish the fire, which caused it to spread and cause further damage.
