November-January 2002
This report highlights the events concerning colonizing activities in the West Bank and Gaza that occurred between the months of November and January. The report describes and evaluates those events and their effects on the Palestinian community. The report also tries to predict the repercussions expected in the future as a result of those events.

Israeli violations in Jerusalem during the month of November 2001
1/11/01: Israeli settlers seized the house of Mrs. Fawzia Al- Kurd in sheik Jarrah quarter, North of the old city of Jerusalem. The house is 130 m2. It is worth mentioning that Mrs. Al- Kurd obtains the right ownership document for the house.
3/11/2001: The Israeli bulldozers demolished 30 tombs belonging to Rafat and Zar'iy families in Al Sheikh Anbar area during road construction. This road will pass through Az Zaiem village and will end up in Anata village. The purpose of this road is to link Maale Adumim and Anatot settlements.
6/11/2001: A Tender Announcement issued in Al-Quds newspaper is demanding for a new structure in Abu Ghneim 'Har Homa' settlement of Jerusalem district.
7/11/2001: The Israeli high court decided not to evict the settlers that occupied the house of Al Kurd family in Jerusalem. The settlers had captured the house last week in Sheikh Jarah neighbourhood of Jerusalem.
8/11/2001: The Israeli army evicted by force the family of Wael Qunaibi from their house for the benefit of a Jewish colonization society in Jerusalem district-Sheikh Jarah neighbourhood. Also, they dispatched eviction orders to two other Palestinian families in the same area.
9/11/2001: In Jerusalem district, three colonizing communities demanded the Israeli government to transform Al Omariya Palestinian school (southwest of Al Aqsa mosque) into a synagogue.
10/11/2001: A report issued by the Orient House in Jerusalem District revealed that the Israeli government has rebuilt the infrastructure for a number of settlement outposts, which were evacuated since Barak's term. The report added that Maale Hagit settlement located east Mikhmas village was considered as an illegal outpost, but recently it has been renewed by erecting 9 caravans on it. The second settlement called Neve Erez, also added 9 caravans.
12/11/2001: In Jaba' village located in the north of Jerusalem district, number of settlers occupied tens of dunums of agricultural land, aiming to annex them to Adam settlement which is established on the village land. The villagers said that a large group of settlers recently attacked the cultivated land and uprooted hundreds of olive trees; also they destroyed the fence that surrounded the lands in preparation to capture them. Villagers also confirmed that the threatened land estimated to be around 90 dunums. Lately, settlers opened a road that links Adam settlement with the bypass road on another 15 dunums from the village land.
13/11/2001: The Israeli forces bulldozed an agricultural land near Nabi Sameul road-Ras Ayyash area northwest Jerusalem city. Furthermore, the Israeli Authorities sent an ultimatum to the villager Ahmad Mughrabi to demolish his house under the pretext of not having building permits in Rafat village northwest Jerusalem city. Moreover, the mayor Mouhamad Khader clarified that the Israeli army pursues to capture the house of Mohamad Taha that sheltered 14 persons to transform it into military barracks towards Beitunia village.
14/11/2001: The Israeli Military Administration of Beit El dispatched house demolition orders to 51 households in Al Ezariya, Zaeem and Tur villages in order to construct a bypass road near the Hebrew University in Al Tur area.
14/11/2001: A new Israeli plan was endorsed containing new settlement outpost construction on 980 Dunums in Beit Safafa village in an area called kherbat Tabaliya for establishing 4600 housing units in order to expand the settlements close to Jerusalem such as Har Shemuel.
21/11/2001: The Israeli police forces have closed down several Palestinian Authority offices in Al-Eizariya on Jerusalem's eastern outskirts, claiming that these offices were being used by Palestinian security agencies.
23/11/2001: The Israeli bulldozers demolished a store and a wall belonging to Abedel Salam Abu Khalef's farm in Al Jeeb village near Givat Zeev settlement in Jerusalem district. In addition, they bulldozed a nursery and uprooted fruit and forestry trees from the same farm.
Israeli violations in Jerusalem area during the month of December 2001
10/12/01: Israeli occupation forces (OF) stormed the main entrance to Al- Ram town north of Jerusalem and threw tear gas and sound bombs at Palestinians. 15 elderly people were transferred to the local medical center for treatment from gas inhalation. 3 Palestinian youngsters were detained and taken to unknown destination.
10/12/01:
OF stationed at Dahiat Al- Barid main checkpoint separating between Jerusalem and Ramallah chased more than 50 Palestinians who tried to reach their workplaces, schools and businesses in Jerusalem. They were rounded up and detained at the checkpoint for many hours in difficult conditions. During their detention, they were humiliated and abused by Israeli soldiers manning the checkpoint.
16/12/01: Israeli border-guard soldiers attacked and beat a number of Palestinian citizens in Al-Wad Street of the old city. The attack took place at the time when the area was quiet and peaceful. Two of the beaten people were taken to hospital for treatment.
20/12/01: In Jerusalem District, Israeli forces destroyed a large section of the electricity network northwest of Jerusalem. This network supplied 15 villages with electricity. The same electric company suffered damage before when its electricity poles were downed by Israeli attacks.
20/12/01: OF continue to open a military road at the hill opposite Qalandia military road block to link the main road with the military observation posts set-up there to monitor Palestinian movement in this vital junction. See photo
20/12/01: Israeli courts extended the detention of Dr. Ahmad Salmani, director of Health Work Committees for 9 months. Local and international humanitarian organizations and labor unions asked for an immediate release of Dr. Salmani.
21/12/2001: The Jerusalem municipality asked the Ministry of Finance for funds to renovate about 500 houses in Gilo settlement and an additional 1,100 houses there after one month.
23/12/01: The Israeli minister of religions recommended the adoption of the Israeli settlers' idea to make the spring of Silwan into a Jewish Mikva (ritual place).
23/12/01: The Israeli Ministerial Committee for Jerusalem Affairs decided to demolish 300 Palestinian houses in Jerusalem and authorized police department to decide suitable dates for actual demolition.
24/12/01: The Israeli police removed the Christmas tree that was set-up in front of the Orient House by religious and national local and international personalities to celebrate Christmas. This Israeli act represents a clear violation of the freedom of worship.
26/12/01: In a statement issued yesterday, the municipality of occupied Jerusalem threatened to demolish more Palestinian houses in Jerusalem under the pretext of un-licensing. The statement announced the following measures against those who won't comply:
1.The issuance of an immediate administrative demolition order against any one who doesn't comply with the municipality's order to stop construction.
2.The review of all cases of house demolition orders against Palestinian constructions.
26/12/01: Supporters of the Israeli right wing extremist parties staged a march around the walls of the old city of Jerusalem and called upon Sharon to impose Israeli sovereignty over Al- Haram Al-Sharif.

29/12/01: Israeli forces seized a garbage truck, which belongs to the village association of Beit Surik located northwest of Jerusalem.

31/12/01: The Israeli District Committee for Planning and Construction in Jerusalem ratified the construction of 630 residential units in the settlement of Armone H'ntsif on Jabel Al- Mukaber.

7/01/02: The Jewish municipality of occupied Jerusalem endorsed the implementation of infrastructure works in the colonial blocks for the year 2002 with a total cost of 450 million NIS.

18/01/02: The OA handed Mr. Shaker Ibrahim an order to demolish his house in Burg Laqlaq in the old city of Jerusalem. The order stipulated that Mr. Ibrahim should demolish his house by his own hands and gave him two weeks to do so, otherwise, the OA will destroy it at his expense.
19/01/02: Israeli occupation authorities resumed excavation and digging works in Burj Laqlaq area inside the walls of the old city of Jerusalem. 200 residential units for exclusive Jewish use are planned to be built in this place amidst the Muslim quarter of the old city. Click for more details
21/01/02: In East Jerusalem, the Israeli Authorities demolished two houses that belonged to four families in the Burg Al Laqlaq area of the Muslim quarter in Jerusalem's old city, under the pretext of not having permits. The house, owned by Yaser Shaker Ibrahim, was demolished to make way for a new settlement outpost. At the same time, the Jerusalem municipality employees said that they would soon seize another six houses in the same region and deliver three demolition notices.

Israeli violations in Jerusalem during the month of February 2002
4/02/02: The Jerusalem municipality bulldozers demolished two under-construction houses that belong to Ahma Othman and Omar Shalalda estimated at 180 m2 in Albustan neighbourhood of Al Issawiya town in Jerusalem district. The Israeli authorities claimed the houses are destroyed because they were built without building permits.
5/02/02: The Jerusalem Municipality sent demolition notices to 15 house-owners in Beit Hanina neighborhood under the pretext of not having permits.
6/02/02: Mayor of occupied Jerusalem admitted that his government was demolishing Palestinian houses in Eastern Jerusalem to avoid a Palestinian majority, added that the demolition would not stop because it carried political implications.
6/02/02: The Israeli-Jerusalem municipality bulldozers demolished three houses in Beit Hanina neighborhood to the north of Jerusalem under the pretext of unlicensed construction .The houses' area is estimated to be between 125 and 160 m2. The houses belong to Khaled al Natsha ,Khaled Abu Sbaih and Basam Shubaki. As for the two other houses, families managed to win a court order to stop demolition process.
7/02/02: The Israeli Authorities uprooted more than 200 olive trees belonging to Mohamad Saleh Taha from Qatana village northwest Jerusalem city.
7/02/02: The Israeli bulldozers levelled tens of Dunums in an agricultural land in Beddow and Beit Surik villages of Jerusalem District .The Israeli Authorities intend to open a settlement bypass road to link Nabi Sumoail settlement with Hadar settlement by destroying the agricultural land in Beddow village. Additionally, Israeli bulldozers cleared more than 50 Dunums of Beit Surik villagers' land.
10/02/02: The Construction and Housing Minister Natan Sharansky decided an establishment of a big settlement city in East Jerusalem of the eastern part of Maale Adumim settlement on Azzaeim ,Anata and Essawiya villages mentioning that this new settlement city plan called E1 is estimated at 12.5 km2 in area, stretching from east Zaim until Khan Ahmar region. According to the endorsed plan. Pointed out it will construct 1500 housing units with the ability to expand it to connect Maale Adumim ,Pisgat Zeev and French hill settlements. In addition, the construction of five Hotels, commercial mall, two bus and tram stations and an industrial zone, and plans to build seven permanent houses will be implemented in Tel Rumeida settlement in Hebron district.
19/02/02: The Israeli bulldozers, under the protection of army forces, demolished two Palestinian houses in Umm Tuba village adjacent to Abu Ghnaim Mountain, south of Jerusalem city, under the pretext of not having permits. The first house has an area of 80 m2 and the second one is 70 m2 belonging to Na'im Abu Tair and Majed Abu Tair .The house owners pointed out that they tried to obtain a building license but the Israeli authorities refused their request alleging that it will be constructed on confiscated lands.

5/12/01: OF bombarded the headquarters of the Palestinian Preventive Security Forces, Unit 17 and the presidential and residential installations in Khan Yunis. At the same day, OF bombarded the headquarters of the Special Forces and National Security Forces in Tulkarem causing heavy damage.
8/12/01: Israeli planes attacked Arafat's police compound in Gaza destroying many buildings and hitting Al- Shifa' hospital. In addition, the headquarters of the police and intelligence in Rafah city were destroyed.
9/12/01: OF shelled Palestinian houses in Khan Yunis refugee camp and Austrian housing project causing damage to properties.
11/12/01: OF destroyed three houses belonging to Hasan Saleh Sha'er, Wahbi Obeid Sha'er and Husni Suleiman Sha'er in Rafah. The total members of the three families are 36 persons.
12/12/01: Israeli bulldozers devastated large areas of agricultural land located between the settlements of Dogheit and Ele Sinai north of Gaza Strip.
12/12/01: OF bombarded the areas of Rabwat Al- Gharbia in Khan Yunis causing material losses to Palestinian houses.
13/12/01: Of shelled the city of Beit Hanon causing heavy damage to Palestinian houses.
1512/01: Thirteen Palestinian houses were destroyed during an Israeli military incursion into Palestinian- controlled areas in Khan Yunis.
25/12/01: OF shelled the area of Al- Amal quarter in Khan Yunis causing damage to many houses. The refugee camp of Khan Yunis was also bombarded causing material losses to the Khaldiya school.

5/01/02: OF stormed the fishers' port in Gaza and destroyed four fishing boats owned by Mr. Na'im Qanan, Mr. Fuad Amouri and Mr. Shehada Douri.
6/01/02: OF bulldozers devastated the land of Palestinian farmers north east of Rafah close to the settlement of Muraj as follows:

9/01/02: OF destroyed the wall and southern fence of Gaza International airport after invading Palestinian- controlled areas.

18/01/02: OF destroyed the electricity network in Salaqa area in Beit Lahia causing blackout in the area.
25/01/02: OF devastated 600 m2 of the land of Mr. Yusif Agha which was planted with wheat near Deir Abalah, Gaza.

1/02/02: OF stationed in the settlement of Kefar Darum bombarded Palestinian houses north of the settlement causing heavy damage as follows:

The house of Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim Abu- Samra (200 m2);

The house of Mr. Khalid Ahmad Salameh Abu ' I'bied (170 m2);

Al- Shawa carpentry shop ( 1200 m2).
15/02/02: OF made an incursion in to Palestinian controlled areas in Gaza city and the area of Hajar Al- Dik destroying four Palestinian houses, a factory and devastating about 90 dunums of agricultural land, wells, pools and irrigation systems.
