Closure of the main iron gate entrance of Aboud village, Ramallah governorate

July 4, 2022
in Closure
Closure of the main iron gate entrance of Aboud village, Ramallah governorate

  • Violation: Closing the main entrance to the village.
  • Location: Aboud village / Ramallah and Al-Bireh governorate.
  • Violation date: 09/06/2022 AD.
  • Perpetrators: The Israeli Occupation Army.
  • Affected party: residents of Aboud village.

The Violation details:

On Thursday morning, June 09, 2022, the occupation army closed the main iron gate that connects the village of Aboud with the neighboring villages through bypass road No. 465, which penetrates the village lands and connects the Palestinian villages and communities to each other.

It should be added that the closure of this entrance has a negative impact on the lives of the Palestinian citizens because it is the main and the most convenient entrance that connects the village with other Palestinian areas.

For his part, Mr. Elias Azer, head of the Aboud village council, gave the following account to LRC’s field researcher:

“What is actually happening is restricting the citizens’ movement without any justifications and without any clear reasons as they have to go through a secondary road towards the village of Beit Rima and then continue on their way to their work, and this increases the distance by five kilometers to reach the same destination. There is, also, an emergency center and public service center in the village that are used by the citizens of this villages and the neighboring villages”.

It is noteworthy that the Israeli occupation for nearly 15 years has insisted on closing the western entrance to the village of Aboud, which connects the village to the village of al-Lubban al-Gharbi. The distance between the two villages previously did not exceed 3 km, while today it is more than 14 km. It is also the closed road has a historical character as it was the road connecting the north and center of the West Bank in the Ottoman era.

It is noteworthy that the Israeli occupation, for nearly 15 years, has closed the western entrance to the village of Aboud, which connects it to the village of al-Lubban al-Gharbi, with a length of only 3 km, while the alternative road that citizens take between the two villages now exceeds 14 km in length. On the other hand, the closed road has a historical character as it was used during the Ottoman era to connect between the north and center of the West Bank.

The Israeli occupation is currently working on linking the settlement of “Oferim” with the settlement of “Beit Aryeh”, passing through that closed road, and this implicitly cancels the idea of re-opening the road for Palestinian use. This act constitutes a clear violation of international laws and covenants that call on the occupying power to safeguard  the freedom of movement in the occupied territories as well as the preservation of historical monuments.
