Description:

Monday, October 26th 2020 , the Israeli Occupation Forces sealed off the street that links Aj-Jalazoun refugees camp to Nablus city .

The Occupation Forces every once in a while close off the metal gate to Aj-Jalazoun refugees camp as a collective punishment that affects people of Ein Yabroud , Yabroud , and Silwad , and those heading towards and from Ramallah.

Citizen have to take alternative roads to get to services and medical centers , the alternatives  take more time and energy (about 12 km more than the road through Aj-Jalazoun Refugees camp.

Since the Year 2000 until 2007, the gate was completely closed, which affected peoples’ lives and development , then the occupation opened the gate , and they close it every once in a while to remind people of Aj-Jalazoun how miserable their lives can be under The Israeli Occupation.

A violation of international law:

The road that links Aj-Jalazoun refugee’s camp to Al-Bireh city goes back to the Ottoman era, and it used to be a vital road for merchants. After 1967, the occupation imposed control over the road after building the So Called Civil Administration’s headquarter nearby the road, and an Israeli watch point in the area.

Israeli closures and International Law:

  • Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provides that: “everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.”
  • Article 5. “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”
  • Article 9: “no one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile”.
  • Article 13: (1) Everyone has the rightto freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state. (2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights:

Article 7: No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. In particular, no one shall be subjected without his free consent to medical or scientific experimentation.

Article 9:  1. Everyone has the right to liberty and security of person. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention. No one shall be deprived of his liberty except on such grounds and in accordance with such procedure as are established by law.

  • Anyone arrested or detained on a criminal charge shall be brought promptly before a judge or other officer authorized by law to exercise judicial power and shall be entitled to trial within a reasonable time or to release. It shall not be the general rule that persons awaiting trial shall be detained in custody, but release may be subject to guarantees to appear for trial, at any other stage of the judicial proceedings, and, should occasion arise, for execution of the judgment.
