Israeli Occupation Forces notify under construction school of Stop-work in Bethlehem

  • Violation: issuing stop-work order
  • Location:  Beit Ta'mar- Bethlehem
  • Date: April 19, 2017
  • Perpetrators: Israeli Occupation Forces
  • Victims:  Jib Al-Dheeb school

Details:

Israel Civil Administration notified on April 19, 2017 an under construction school of stop-work in the area of Beit Ta'mar in Bethlehem on the claim of "unlicensed construction".

Members of Zawahreh family donated a parcel of land to the village council in order to build a new school for the area known as Jib Al-Dheeb to support the educational sector in the village.

Unfortunately, the occupation issued a stop-work order halting the construction works on the school. Noteworthy, the order mentioned that the Inspection Sub-Committee of Israel Civil Administration will consider whether to demolish the structure or restore its previous status during its coming session on May 17, 2017.

Such Israeli measure is considered a blatant violation of Human Rights. The right to education is reflected in international law in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Articles 13 and 14 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Article 26 states, "Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory
