Stop-work orders in the Bethlehem village of Umm Salamona

Details:

The Israeli occupation authorities on May 11, 2015 served stop-work and construction orders on four residences belonging to citizens from Umm Salamona village. Citizen Rami Hayyan from the village council of Um Salamona said that a vehicle relative to Israel Civil Administration accompanied by a patrol from the Israeli occupation army raided the village at 10:00 in the morning and delivered the stop-work orders.

The military orders compelled the owners to halt all construction works and restore the previous status of the notified structures. June26, 2015 was assigned as the hearing session of the Inspection Sub-Committee in the Israeli court of Beit El to consider whether to demolish the structures or restore their previous status.

One of the notified people, citizen Ja’far Khaleel, said that he established the notified structure to shelter his mother and sister who are in a need for a proper accommodation.

Umm Salamona:

It is located 8km to the south of Bethlehem city; the village is edged by the towns of Wad Al-Nis and Jurat Al-Sham’a from the north, Marah M’alla from the east, Beit Fajjar from the south and the colony of Migdal Oz from the west that is founded on confiscated lands from the village itself.

Um Salamona totals 2176 dunums in area, of which 160 dunums are the village’s built-up area; it has a total population of 1218 people until 2014. The Israeli occupation army confiscated 248 dunums for the favor of the following:

  1. 5 dunums were confiscated for the favor of Migdal Oz colony that was established in 1977 with a population of 300 colonists.
  2. 80 dunums were confiscated for the favor of colonial roads
  3. 163 dunums were confiscated as per the route of the apartheid wall

The lands of Umm Salamona are classified, according to Oslo Accords, as follows:

  • 431 dunums are classified as area A (20% of the village’s total area)
  • 1745 dunums are classified as area C (80% of the village’s total area)
