The Seventh Intermediary Report for the Monitoring Israeli Colonizing Activities Project

November 2, 2001

This report highlights the events concerning colonizing activities in the West Bank and Gaza that occurred between the months of August and October. The report describes and evaluates those events and their effects on the Palestinian community. The report also tries to predict the repercussions expected in the future as a result of those events.

August:

2/8/2001:
Jerusalem Municipality declared the confiscation of more than 100 dunums from the land of Jabal Al-Mukabber for the purpose of constructing a colonial road linking the eastern and western settlements.

10/8/2001:

Closing several Palestinian institutions as the Orient House, Chamber of Commerce, Jerusalem Governorate Headquarters and the Palestinian Telecommunication Company at Abu Dis town.

12/8/2001:

Setting fire on several vehicles for Palestinians at Al-Ram occupation block claiming that they are stopping in a prohibited stopping area.

30/8/2001:

The Israeli occupation forces ( OF) took over the house of Mohammad Ayed Abu Hadid fro Alsawahreh Alsharqiya east of Hebron to use it as a military control point.

September:

6/9/2001:

The (OF) started digging several tunnels around Jerusalem in the context of a plan aiming to isolate the city from the rest of the West Bank.

8/9/2001:

Attiret Kohanim settlers group submitted an appeal to hold over 44 dunums of Beit safafa belonging to Orthodox Patriarky.

11/9/2001:

OF demolished three houses in Al-Ashqariya (Beit Hanina – Jerusalem). They gave the owners just three minutes to evacuate the houses.

16/9/2001:

OF digged a tunnel at Aljeeb area with a length of 300 m and a width of 2 m. They pumped wastewater into the tunnel which will lead to environmental catastrophe and spreading of several diseases.

23/9/2001:

The Israeli Police prevented Alawkaf Alislamiya from conducting repairing activities on the southern wall of Alaqsa Mosque claiming that these activities are conducted without supervision and control.

26/9/2001:

OF bulldozers conducted an excavation work on the land adjacent to the occupation block checkpoint at the entrance of Qalandia Refugee Camp. The bulldozing lead to negative effects on the water network.

October:

6/10/2001:

Excavation works by the Israeli Antiquities Authorities are still underway around Al- Haram Al- Sharif in Jerusalem according to information given by the Palestinian families of Ansari and Dajani who live in the old city. The two families confirmed that their houses are being exposed to damage as a result of the ongoing digging works under the basis of the houses. The Israeli archeologist John Sabilgan said that the digging works are done at high speed and that the ' faithfuls of the Temple Mount' are preparing plans for the 're-construction of the third Temple' under the supervision of engineer Gideon Harlaq.

12.10.2001:

A group of armed settlers stormed the house of Mrs. Loris Shubash in Al- Musrara quarter claiming to have acquired ownership of the house. Israeli police came to the scene, occupied the house and closed it indefinitely.

16.10.2001:

Israeli occupation forces handed Mr. Wa'el Qneibi an order issued by the Israeli Magistrates court of Jerusalem asking him to evacuate the family house located in Sheik Jarrah quarter as soon as possible. The decision was taken under the pretext of building a new Jewish residential neighborhood in the area.

17.10.2001:

The mayor of the occupied city of Jerusalem Ihud Olmert revealed a plan to build a new Jewish residential quarter and commercial center out side the southern wall of Al- Haram Al- Sharif. The plan includes the construction of a tunnel to link the newly proposed project with the western wall.

24.10.2001:

Israeli occupation forces demolished three houses in Wadi Qadum and Jabel Al- Mukaber belonging to the following persons:

1. Mohammed Eid Salaimeh, 122 m2, 18 family members;

2. Maher Salaimeh, 120 m2, 6 family members;

3. Rania Halassa, 100 m2, 3 family members.

The houses were demolished to make room for the construction of the eastern Ring Road being built at the expense of Palestinian land and homes, for more information.

31.10.2001:

Israeli bulldozers demolished six historical toms in Sheik Anbar near the village of Al- Ze'im east of the city of Jerusalem.

31.10.2001:

Israeli army and officials of Occupied Jerusalem municipality demolished 8 apartments in Shu'fat and Beit Hanina owned by the following people:

1. Mustafa Abu- Nii' and his son, 150m2;

2. Abdul Salam Alqam and Mustafa Alqam, 240 m2;

3. Hussein Kisawni and Nabil Abu- Hadad;

4. Nabil Abu- Hamda and Musa Eid.

August

2/8/2001:
Israeli shelling of destroyed a poultry farm in the area of Mughraqa.

5/8/2001:

The OF started to build a new military post near the settlement of Nitzer Hazani which was established on Khan Yunis land.

7/8/2001:

The OF destroyed a well belonging to Khan Yunis municipality in the area of Abu- Rashwan close to the settlement of Neve Dikalim.

8/8/2001:

The OF started to build a new military garrison on a hill close to the border line east of Beit Hanon town.

9/8/2001:

Israeli army bulldozers excavated 10 dunums of land cultivated with onions and owned by Mr. Abdul Qader Abu Holi in Qarara area/ Khan Yunis.

13/8/2001:

Four Israeli tanks broke through area A in Qarara/ Khan Yunis and destroyed a two floor house owned by Mr. Taher Ibrahim Abdiin.

23/8/2001:
Israeli settlers started to build new housing units in the settlement of Dogheit north west of Beit Lahia. The area of the new construction site is estimated at 500 m2.

23/8/2001:

The OF seized the second floor of Bashir family located in Deir Al- Balah. At the beginning of Intrifada the OF uprooted 170 trees from the garden of the house.

25/8/2001:

The OF tanks destroyed 7 houses in Deir Al- Balah during a break through in area A. The destroyed houses are owned by Colonel Ali Abu- Amra, the family of Al- Zurei'i and the family of Abu- Al- Asal.

29/8/2001:
The OF stormed area A in Rafah and destroyed 16 houses inhabited by 30 families.

31/8/2001:
The OF closed the rubbish dump sites in the governorates of Khan Yunis, Bethlehem and Hebron. His action might cause ecological problems in these three areas.

31/8/2001:
The OF bulldozers demolished 7 houses in Brazil quarter in Rafah owned by the family of Sha'er and located near the Egyptian borders.

September

2/9/2001:

Israeli bulldozers destroyed agricultural land cultivated with olive trees in the area of Abu Hajaj related to Qarara residents.

4/9/2001:

The OF bulldozers broke through zone A in Sheikh Ijlin in Gaza governorate devastating large areas of land and uprooting hundreds of vine trees.

8/9/2001:
The Israeli shelling of the city of Gaza caused the destruction of cables factory. Financial losses are estimated at 1.5 million dollars.

8/9/2001:

A report issued by the Palestinian Ministry Of Agriculture ( MOA) said the total losses in the agricultural sector in Palestine has reached 345 million dollars as follows:

Destruction of trees and crops- 97 million $;
Losses in olive sector – 13.4 million $;
Losses as a result of low prices- 43.75 million $;
Losses in livestock sector – 14 million $;
Losses as a result of the increase of fodder prices – 6.37 million $;
Losses in exports and imports – 13.3 million 4;
Losses in agricultural transport – 20.6 million $;
Losses in agricultural labor – 19. 6 million $;
Losses resulted from the destruction of soil surface (130 000 dunums) – 20 million $;
Other direct losses were as followed:

– Uprooting of 39642;

– Demolition of 134 agricultural stores;

– Demolition of 45 poultry farms;

– Destruction of 15 sheep sheds;

– Killing of 792 sheep;

– Destruction of 2395 bee cells;

– Destruction of 133 wells;

– Demolition of 207 agricultural barracks;

– Killing of 98356 birds;

– Devastation of 5771 dunums of irrigation systems;

– Destruction of 242 pools and tanks;

– Destruction of 431 dunums of green houses;

– Devastation of 17500 dunums of agricultural land.

10/9/2001:

Israeli occupation authorities began to mark the new colonialist road which is going to link between the settlements of Gush Qatif west of Khan Yunis. The planned one kilometer long road will be built on land owned by the families of Abu- Holi, Al- Fara, Al- Agha and Sha'ath. The total of 40 dunums will be seized for the construction of this road.

10/9/2001:
Israeli bulldozers started to work on a new road along the eastern borders of Beit Hanon. The length of the road is going to be one kilometer.

11/9/2001:

Israeli occupation authorities set- up 20 new Caravans on Palestinian land south and west of the settlement of Kfar Darum near Deir Al- Balah. 500 dunums owned by Mr. Abdel Qader Bashir were seized for this purpose.

11/9/2001:
Israeli bulldozers destroyed vast areas of agricultural land owned by the families of Al- Astal and Laham in Tel Ridan / Khan Yunis. 50 guava trees and 20 palm trees were uprooted as well.

17/9/2001:

Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian land in Mawasi Khan Yunis destroying irrigation systems and uprooting 40 palm trees owned by Mr. Azmi Abdul Majid Majaideh.

17/9/2001:
Israeli occupation authorities started to build a new road to at the expense of Palestinian land to link between the colonialist block of Gush Qatif and the Shuhada junction north of Qarara town. The new road will by 300 meters long and 32 meters wide. At least 200 dunums of land belonging to the families of Qidra, Fara and Riziq will be used for the construction of the new road.

19/9/2001:
The OF bulldozers demolished two houses, the first of which is owned by Mr. Nasser Hussein Zu'rub and located in Al- Za'arbeh area on the Egyptian borders, and the second is owned by Khalid Hassan Sha'er and is located east of Salah Eddin Gate.

19/9/2001:

The OF destroyed the installations and offices of Gaza International port funded by EEC.

23/9/2001:
The OF destroyed the street of Abu- Al Ajiin situated near the settlement of Kfar Darum east of the Deir Al- Balah.

25/9/2001:
The OF bulldozers began to build a new bypass road through Palestinian land west of Kfar Darum settlement. The new road will be 350 meters long and it will link Kfar Darum with Abu Arif road. Hundreds of dunums related to the families of Abu- Samra and Bashir will be destroyed. Water irrigation systems and green houses have been damaged as a result.

26/9/2001:

The OF bulldozers excavated 5 dunums in Mawasi Khan Yunis with the aim of establishing a security zone along the roads leading to the hotel tourist area at the Mediterranean sea. So far 200 guava trees and 150 palm trees owned by Mr. Muhi Eddin and Mohammed Al- Astal and the family of Laham.

October

8/10/2001:

The OF started to open a new bypass road to link between the settlements of Nitsanit and Dogheit. The planned road is going to be 5 kilometers long.

18/10/2001:
The OF started to open a new bypass road to link between Al- Matahen street and Salah Eddin street. A bridge has been built over Salah Eddin street for the exclusive use of colonialists. 400 dunums of land owned by the families of Fara, Abu- Holi, Agha and Sha'ath will be taken for this project.

29/9/2001:
The Occupation authorities started to survey the lands of Wadi Al- Salaqa in preparation for the construction of a new colonialist road to link between the colonialist block of Qush Qatif and Kisufim road. The planned road will be one kilometer long by 12 meters wide.
