The Fifth Intermediary Report for the Monitoring Israeli Colonizing Activities Project

May 1, 2001

This report highlights the events concerning colonizing activities in the West Bank and Gaza that occurred between the months of February and April. The report describes and evaluates those events and their effects on the Palestinian community. The report also tries to predict the repercussions expected in the future as a result of those events.

Israeli bulldozers demolished a three- storey house and a wall in Al- Ram town between Jerusalem and Ramallah. The house is owned by Mr. Salah Al- Rishiq. The demolition was carried out under the pretext of unlicensing, while Palestinian believe it was done as a vengeance for the killing of an Israeli settler in the area

The local affairs court in Jerusalem issued a resolution postponing the demolished of a building comprised of 12 apartments and owned by Mr. Badawi Al- Qawasmeh. The building is located between Beit Hanina nad Al _Ram. Earlier, the Israeli high court decided to demolish the building before 31.1.2001.

The Jerusalem Municipality court imposed a 300 000 NIS fine on Mr. Saleh Al- Salaimeh who lives in Jerusalem for building without a license.

Israeli Land Authorities (Keren Ki'met) started to level land cultivated with serials at the eastern slopes of Jabal Al- Mukaber in Jerusalem owned by the families of Mish'al and Shqirat. The area of the land is 10 dunums. Forest trees have been planted by the Israeli authorities to confirm their confiscation of the land prior to the construction of 200 housing units for the exclusive Israeli use in this area. It is worth to mention that in 1972, the Israeli authorities had confiscated more than 2000 dunums from Jabal Al- Mukaber land to build the current settlement of Armon.

Israeli bulldozers demolished a building under construction owned by Sheik Mohammed Sa'id Al- Jamal in Al- Ezariya ( Bethany). The building which comprised a mosque, school, playground, pool and well was 750 m2. The construction costs are estimated at 250 000 US $.
Israeli bulldozers demolished a 20 m2 retaining wall for Al- Zaru family in Al- Ezariya. Another 50 m2 retaining wall was destroyed in Beit Hanina.

Israeli authorities destroyed a house under construction owned by Mr. Ibrahim Qirish. This destruction was the second of its kind in a year. The homes and barracks of Mr. Khalid Radadeh, Salah Ghawi and Ghaleb Razim were also demolished. They are all located in Al- Ezariya and Al- Za'im.

Israeli bulldozers demolished the house of Mr. Salim Shawamreh in Anata for the third time. Three barracks owned by Mr. Mohammed Kurshan, Abed Kurshan and Daud Kurshan were demolished in the same area under the pretext of un-licensing. Water and telephone lines were damaged during the demolition process.
Israeli occupation authorities devastated dozens of dunums of agricultural land in Anata and Isawiya owned by Mr. Khader Saleh, Maher Muheisen, Mahmud Hamdan, Hani Isawi and Mohammed Dirbas. Water pipes were also damaged.

The Israeli government published a tender to build 496 housing units in Ma'aleh Adumim settlement.

The Israeli government intends to destroy three houses owned by Mr. Rafiq Kharuf in Sheik Jarrah. The houses will be destroyed to make room for the construction of the tunnel road which is 25 meters wide.

The Jerusalem municipality bulldozers are currently destroying tombs in St. Mary's cemetery near Getsemany garden to make space for the building of a road there. The cemetery is owned by the orthodox community.

Israeli army occupied a 5 storey building in Kufr Aqab north of Jerusalem. The building which is owned by Mr. Ibrahim Qasas, was changed to a military garrison and observation point.

Israeli antiquities authorities and Jerusalem municipality continue to dig and built underground installations from Jafa gate passing through the Morocan gate down to Silwan village. On the other hand, digging works are under way in the southern and western sides of Al- Aqsa Mosque.

The Gaza Strip

For background information on the Gaza Strip click here. The violations committed by Israeli occupation forces and settlers in the Gaza Strip throughout the period between February and April 2001 are detailed below:

Israeli bulldozers closed a number of agricultural roads leading to farms and green houses in Al- Sifa area north of Beit Lahiah.
Israeli bulldozers destroyed more than 20 dunums of land cultivated with potatoes and olive trees in Khan Yunis owned by Mr. Abdul Najar Tabasi and Mr. Mohammed Tabasi. Irrigation systems, wells and green houses were aslo destroyed near the settlement of Muraj. 15 dunums planted with palm trees and olives owned by Mr. Hamdi Al-Misri were uprooted at the same area. 500 olive trees and three dunums planted with potatoes and owned by Mr. Hamuda Al- Misri were uprooted as well. 20 another dunums of adjacent land were leveled by Israeli bulldozers.
Israeli bulldozers continued to devastate hundreds of dunums of land near the settlement of Neve Dikalim owned by the families of Najar, Zu'rub and Al- Sha'ir. Dozens of guava and palm trees owned by Al- Abadleh family near the settlement of Nitser Hazani north of Khan Yunis were uprooted.
Israeli soldiers seized the house of Mr. Khalaf Abu- Hajaj in Wadi Salaqa near Qarara (Khan Yunis). The house is 200 m2 and built of two levels. It was turned to a military garrison.. In addition, 50 fruitful trees and 6 dunums owned by Mr. Sulieman Gharaizeh were leveled in the same area. In Beit Lahiah, Israeli bulldozers destroyed many green houses and two wells used to provide water for agricultural land in the area.
Israeli forces destroyed a cement factory near Al- Muntar crossing point and a wall surrounding a gas station which was burned two days before.

Israeli forces and settlers continued to devastate land and uproot trees close to the settlements and military positions in Mawasi Khan Yunis.

Israeli bulldozers devastated large areas of land planted with hundreds of trees located along the truce line east of Khan Yunis after an Israeli military jeep had co me under fire.

6 homes inhabited by 64 people were demolished near Al-Muntar east of Gaza. Two gas stations and two wells and a steel factory were also demolished. 100 dunums of land were leveled in zone A close to the road linking between Al- Muntar crossing point and Nitsarim settlement.
Israeli forces continue to bulldoze agricultural land and uproot trees near the truce line east of Khan Yunis.

A carpentry workshop near al- Muntar cross point owned by the family of Kordia was destroyed. A 100 workers are employed in this workshop and become unemployed after the Israeli attack. An oxygen production factory was destroyed also in the same area.
Israeli forces bombarded and destroyed a house in Rafah refugee camp owned by brothers Yusif and Ahamd Aweideh.

Israeli forces prevented Khan Yunis municipality rubbish workers from removing the rubbish dumps near Al- Tufah checkpoint which causes ecological problems.

Officials of Israeli government properties sent notices to 22 Palestinian families who live in Tal Ridan in Mawasi Khan Yunis asking them to evacuate their homes as soon as possible. The notices say that the homes will be destroyed to build a road to link between the military post near Dir Al- Balah and the Israeli settlement near Tal Ridan.

Israeli army bulldozers started to level large areas of agricultural land near the coastal road close to Mawasi Khan Yunis with the aim of building a road to link in between the settlements of Gush Qatif.

Israeli army bulldozers destroyed a house, well, water collection pool and an irrigation system in Ja'farawi area south of Khan Yunis city. More than 200 olive trees were also uprooted in that area.

Israeli army bulldozers removed the barbed wires of the truce line east of Beit Hanon and destroyed hundreds of fruitful trees in a grove owned by Mr. Musa Abu- Odah.
Israeli forces annexed 150 dunums of land to Kefar Darum settlement. The confiscated land which is owned by the families of Abu-Samra, Abu -Bashir and Ja'farawi was encircled with barbed wires. On the other hand, Israeli forces destroyed a house belonging to Abu- Samra family in Dir Al -Balah which was inhabited by 14 members. 24 dunums of land planted with a number of olive trees were destroyed around the house. On last January17th, Israeli forces destroyed two wells and a green house belonging to the same family, in addition to the uprooting of 260 olive, fruit and citrus trees.
7 houses in Al- salam quarter in rafah were demolished and bulldozed and more than 30 dunums of cultivated land owned by the families of Qishta and Al- Sha'ir were also devastated.

Israeli bulldozers continued to uproot thousands of citrus trees. A number of wells were also destroyed in many areas in the Strip.

7 homes and dozens of dunums of agricultural land located in Al – salam quarter near the border line south east of Rafah were destroyed. A house located inside the territory of Palestinian authority was occupied by the Israeli soldiers.

For the fifth time since the outbreak of Intifada, the Israeli forces destroyed bumping stations of sewage lines near the sewage central treatment station in Sheik Iglin quarter in Gaza city.
Israeli bulldozers destroyed a house and an artisan well south of Deir Al- balah.
According to a report issued by the emergency committee formed by the governorate of Rafah to estimate the losses of Israeli aggressions against Palestinian properties, more than 1500 dunums of agricultural land were devastated in various locations in the district.

Israeli forces escalated their attacks against citizens of Gaza governorates including the devastation of big areas of agricultural land located in Al- Muntar area east of Gaza. Israeli bulldozers continued to level land in the area of Qizan Al- najar south of Khan Yunis destroying more than 30 dunums of land owned by the family of Al Sha'ir north east of the settlement of Muraj.

Devastation processes continued against the land of Al- Sha'ir family near Muraj settlement in which dozens of dunums of land and a well were destroyed, as well as the destruction of 5 dunums of green houses planted with flowers and 9 others planted with vegs.

The destruction process continued against the land of Palestinians near Muraj settlement during which 60 olive trees owned by Mr. Khalil Al- masri were uprooted, in addition to the destruction of two green houses for his brother Ahmad.

A report issued by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights confirmed that from the beginning of the Intifada until February 15th, about 7024 dunums of land had been bulldozed. The report added that 78.2% of bulldozed land is agricultural one, while the remaining percentage is forest and sand land. These numbers do not include the areas of homes and premises destroyed.

Israeli bulldozers destroyed 20 dunums of land near the settlement of Muraj south of Khan Yunis uprooting dozens of fruitful trees and damaging green houses. 5 dunums for Mr. Jum'a Al- masri located near the settlement of Muraj were destroyed.

Israeli forces bulldozed the grove of Mr. Salim Abu- Gharabeh in Wadi Al- Salaqa destroying the fruitful trees. The grove is 2 km away from Kisufim military post. 400 dunums of land cultivated with serials and more than 100 green houses were destroyed with the aim of enlarging settler roads. 5 poultry farms, an artisan well and a pool were destroyed in the same area.

Rafah governor said that the Israeli authorities bulldozed 1500 dunums of land in different areas in the governorate and more than 16 000 trees and 100 green houses were destroyed. The governor estimated the losses in the agricultural field at 4 million dollars since the beginning of Intifada.
Israeli army bulldozers started to level Palestinian land close to Farahin area south east of Abasan Al- kabira east of Khan Yunis. During this process, about 100 olive trees owned by Mr. Isma'il Abu – Anza, and 30 almond trees owned by Mr. Naji Abu- Duqa were uprooted.

Israeli army bulldozers devastated 4 dunums of land owned by Mr. Hamdan Al- Sha'ir from Rafah. The land was planted with olive and palm trees. His house was also demolished during the attack.
Israeli bulldozers began to open new colonialist roads linking between the settlements of Nistsanit and Ele Sinai north east of Beit Lahia. The new road will be 1500 meter long located in the yellow area.
20 dunums of land were destroyed in Al- Qarara area. The land is owned by Mr. Abdul Qader Abu- Hawali and it was cultivated with potatoes and onions.

40 dunums of land owned by Talbani family were devastated east of Al- maghazi refugee camp.

Khan Yunis governorate came under attacks by Israeli army bulldozers during which large areas of cultivated land, hundreds of fruitful trees, agricultural materials and green houses were destroyed in Qizan Al- Najar and east of Khuza'a and Al- mawasi.

Israeli bulldozers began to devastate huge areas of Palestinian land near Al- Muntar cross point east of Gaza City.
45 dunums of agricultural land close to Sofa cross point east of Rafah were destroyed. The land is owned by Mr. Ali and Abdullah Jarghun and Isma'il Abu Luli and it was cultivated with potatoes, olive trees and wheat. At the beginning of this year, the Israeli forces had devastated more than 70 dunums from Duhnyyeh checkpoint up to Sofa cross point as part of their destructive campaign against Palestinian land and agriculture.

Israeli authorities seized 166 dunums of land in Al- Qarara north of Khan Yunis for military purposes. The seized land is owned by 21 Palestinians.
Israeli bulldozers destroyed 50 dunums of agricultural land owned by a number of Palestinians who live east of Dir Al- balah. In the meantime, Israeli army continued to bulldoze land east of Al- Bureij refugee camp.

Israeli bulldozers continued to devastate land surrounding four houses owned by the family of Malaka. About 80 dunums planted with olive and citrus trees were destroyed.

2 dunums owned by Mr. Mohammed Hasan Abu- Sanima from Rafah were bulldozed. The land was cultivated with almond trees and barley.

300 hundreds dunums of land planted with olive and citrus trees were destroyed north of Beit Hanon. The land is owned by the families of Abu- Ida, Sweilem and Abu- odeh.

Large areas of land owned by the families of Silmiah, Kishko and Khueiter near Al- Muntar were besieged with barbed wires.
100 dunums cultivated with citrus and olive trees were destroyed east of Beit Hanon. It is owned by Mr. Yusif Abu Ida, Moahmmed Sueilem and Ayub Zweidi and other people from Al- Da'ur and Okashe families.

More than 100 dunums of land planted with olive trees and almonds were destroyed. It is located north of Kisufim military post.

Hundreds of dunums of land were annexed to the settlement of Nitsanit north of Gaza. The confiscated land was surrounded with barbed wires with the aim of doubling the area of the existing settlement.

200 dunums of land were bulldozed near the crossing point between the Palestinian land and green line. The land is owned by Mr. Hussein Nasser, Ahamad Abu Odeh and Ali Nasser and was planted with olive and citrus trees.

A 35 dunums orange grove was devastated east of Beit Hanon with all its trees uprooted. The grove is owned by Mr. Asa'ad Salah. On the other hand, 45 dunums of citrus trees owned by the brothers Izzat, Yahyyia and Sulaiman Ikhurat.

Israeli bulldozers devastated 30 dunums of land cultivated with olive and fruit trees. Dozens of bee cells and water wells were destroyed. The total area destroyed east of Beit Hanon is estimated at 800 dunums.

100 dunums of land cultivated with olive and almond trees in Deir Al- balah were destroyed.
Israeli occupation forces bulldozed 35 dunums belonging to to Mr. Khalil Jaber Khalil from Deir Al- Balah. So far, about 1 000 dunums of green land were devastated in Beit Hanon.
64 dunums of agricultural land were destroyed in Rafah area along the green line. The land was cultivated with olive, wheat and barley. It is owned by the families of Jarghun, Abu- Holi and Fara.
89 dunums of land were destroyed along the green line to the east of Beit Hanon. The land is owned by the familes of Abu- Odeh, Hamad, Abu- Amshe, Huweiji and Abu Al- Hasan.

Israeli army shelled a number of green houses owned by the brothers Naseem, Khalil and Yasser Zweib Al Astal causing heavy damage.

Israeli forces bulldozed 7 dunums covered with green houses close to to Muraj junction north of Rafah. The land belongs to brothers Ayub and Ramadan Dheir and it was planted with tomatoes and cucumbers.

Israeli occupation forces destroyed hundreds of dunums of agricultural land east of Deir Al- Balah cultivated with fruit and olive trees.

Israeli forces leveled land and a well in Al- Ja'farawi quarter south of Kefar Darum settlement in Deir Al- Balah.

Israeli forces bulldozed dozens of dunums along the border line between Gaza and Israel. The land is owned by Mr. Fawzi Abdul Rahim, Suleiman Abu- Ta'imah and Marzuq Abu- Farhaneh. It was planted with almond, olive and wheat.
Israeli forces bulldozed the agricultural area west of the settlement of Dogheit. The land was planted with citrus, guava and vegs. The total area of the land devastated is 28 dunums.

65 dunums and 10 green houses were destroyed in Beit Lahia. They are owned by Mr. Atallah Tarazi, Yaser Zindah, Ahmad Shahin and Mr. Baker Tafish.

500 m2 of land were destroyed in Al- Shawka area east of Rafah which was planted with vegs and almonds.

Israeli bulldozers destroyed 5 green houses and uprooted more than 500 olive, almond and peach trees owned by the families of Abu- Jarqun, Abu- Amreh, Abu-Doga and Abu- Holi. The land is located south east of Khan Yunis near Sofa junction.
Israeli forces started to bulldoze land adjacent to the green line east of Rafah area at a depth of 500 meters inside the territories of the Palestinian authority.
