- Violation: shutting down a Palestinian main road
- Location: Al-Bireh city- Ramallah
- Date: 30/06/2015
- Perpetrators: the Israeli occupation army
Details:
Shutting down roads has always been a policy on the Israeli agenda to inflect punishment on Palestinians and impose a de facto. Also, creating an atmosphere of isolation in the West Bank in addition to movement restrictions was also part of that policy.
A force form the Israeli occupation army on June 30, 2015 shut down the northern entrance of Al-Bireh, which links it to Al-Jalazun refugee camp, through cement blocks.
It should be marked that the citizens of the area will be forced to take a new route that is of 9km in length to reach the same destination that used to take them less time and cost.
A violation of international laws:
It should be marked that the targeted road dates back in time to the Ottoman era and has huge economical significance for it supports the whole economy of the area. In 1967, the Israeli occupation took over the road through the so-called Israel Civil Administration and established a military post, which guarantees a full control on the road and restriction on Palestinian movement. This practice in itself is considered a violation of international laws and covenants that state the protection of the monuments and antiquities founded before the occupation.
International conventions and laws regarding freedom of movement which Israel unabatedly violates:
- Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person”.
- Article 5: “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment”.
- Article 9: “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile”.
- Article 13: Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.
Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.
- Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. In particular, no one shall be subjected without his free consent to medical or scientific experimentation.”
- Article 9: “Everyone has the right to liberty and security of person. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention. No one shall be deprived of his liberty except on such grounds and in accordance with such procedure as are established by law.
