Demolishing a Room and a Shack in Ath-Thuri

On July 18, 2012, the Israeli Municipality in the Occupied City demolished a 16-m2-room and a shack which was used as a barn for the second time on the pretext of unlicensed construction. The demolition took place in Ath-Thuri in a plot over 1000 m2 in area. The structures were the property of Dawood Sarhan, 41, who works as a taxi driver.

The owner said: “at around 9:00 am, a large Israeli force and officers of the so-called Israeli Occupation Civil Administration showed up with a dozer and a truck. The troops confiscated the cattle before the dozer embarked on the demolition of a shack, which was used as a barn, and the room which has been there for over hundred years.  I have not received any warnings prior to demolition. It is the second demolition that targets me, on December 20, 2011, the Israelis demolished a shack and a barn in the same area and uprooted some trees that were around. The Israeli Municipality in the Occupied City claim that the reason for demolition is unlicensed construction; however, it is obvious that the purpose is taking over the land to use it for the Talmudic parks that are filling the Occupied City. Land leveling and placement of fake graves has been going in the adjacent lands so it is clear that my property is coming next. ”

The Israeli Municipality in the Occupied City Forces a Palestinian to Destroy a Bower

On July 30, 2012, the Israeli Municipality in the Occupied City forced Yacoub al Rishq to demolish a bower that he built on the roof of his house to offer a shady spot for his children to play under it. 10 days earlier, officers of the Israeli Municipality in the Occupied City showed up and ordered Yacoub to remove the bower or penalized an amount of 70,000 ILS.

Yacoub placed the bower at the beginning of the summer break since the neighborhood lacks parks and recreational places for Palestinians as there are plenty around but usable only by colonists. However, how are the Israelis going to offer such sites if they are planning to wipe off the whole neighborhood?

Al Rishq is one of many Jerusalemite families who are threatened if losing their residences located in Al Bustan neighborhood in Silwan. The Israeli Supreme Court ruled in favor of a plan to wipe off the whole neighborhood to build a Talmudic park on its ruins.
